Treadmills

Treadmills are the best of the cardio machines for burning calories, However, they are a higher impact exercise than the elliptical or bike. A few factors to consider when shopping for a treadmill are budget, space, and workout goals. Consider your height, weight, number of users and duration of exercise. It is also important to look at features such as motor capacity, weight capacity, incline/decline settings, deck cushioning, and workout programs.

Motor - Continuous horsepower is a measure of power the motor can deliver. Consider your top speed and how often you plan to run as you will need a motor that can last.

Running Surface - this can vary in length and width depending on whether the treadmill is designed for light use or intense running. Consider your height and the length of your stride.

Elliptical Cross Trainers

These cardio machines offer a low-impact, full-body workout that helps to tone and strengthen the body. They can range from a basic lightweight model to a more complete machine. Consider your height, weight, the number of users and the amount of time spent working out. These are also important to consider:

Stride Length - The right elliptical will feel fluid and smooth when in motion, if it feels choppy or overstretched, you may not be the right height for the machine.

Resistance System - Most of the lower end range use a magnetic flywheel resistance system, which is fairly quiet and effective. More advanced models use an Eddy Current Brake System which is more durable and reliable.

Rear or Front Drive - This is mostly down to personal preference, you might prefer the drive axle to be in the front of the machine or the back of the machine.

Exercise Bike

These cardio machines offer a low-impact workout that helps to tone and strengthen the lower body. They are usually the most cost-effective and easiest to use. Consider your height, weight, the number of users and the amount of time spent exercising. These are also important factors to consider:

Pedals & Cranks - Look for good size pedals that provide solid foot support and adjustable straps. The crank takes a lot of strain, higher-end models use a 3-piece system that provides a stronger assembly and makes it easier to service.

Flywheel & Drive System - Most bikes have a belt system that runs the pedal crank to the flywheel. Generally, the heavier the flywheel the smoother the momentum.

Resistance - Electromagnetic systems are the most accurate and sophisticated, but also the most expensive. Spin bikes use direct resistance through a brake pad.
